2019 RAM 1500 to 2019 RAM 3500

Just traded in our 2019 RAM 1500 Classic, 5.7, 8 Spd for a low mileage RAM 3500 Longhorn Mega Cab Dually with 6.7 HO Cummins, Aisin 6 Spd HD, 4x4.
After a couple of winter round trips to Vandenberg from Kansas it was obvious that the RAM 1500 5.7 with tow package was shall we say was challenged.
Having owned and towed our campers with a Ford F350 7.3 Powerstroke with waste-gate turbo in the early 90s had us spoiled. Gave up and lucked upon this 3500 yesterday an hour after it went on the lot.
Looking forward to not having to be concerned if we are going to encounter a headwind on a route!

When we had the F350, I installed a class 5 cowboy drop bumper and simply towed the 33 ft TT on the ball, no sway or compensator hitch, and it tracked straight and true.
Anyone have any thoughts on if I'll be able to do the same or should I still use the Husky Centerline compensator hitch?

You will be well served with that Ram 3500. I haven't had anything less than a one ton diesel dually since 1997 and I would feel lost with a lesser truck. And the 4X4 option is a big plus. When you need it, you need it! Enjoy!

Use the sway control. The 1 ton w/SRW (I am assuming you didn't say) can be overpowered by a trailer gone wild. Increased pulling with the diesel? Absolutely. Does the "towing stability" of the truck platform (150/350) increase like the change from gas to diesel? Not hardly. You have the hitch, it will control the trailer far better than going without (btdt).

Sourdough: It's a dually, and the class 5 receiver is 2.5 in vs the 2 in Husky, we do have a reducing sleeve from 2.5" - 2" and I was trying to avoid all that considering our past experience with the F350 Dually. However, I will heed your advice and slip the Husky into the receiver as a precaution.

A DRW is a much different that a SRW and is why I commented. On the other hand, IMO, a 33' TT on the back of any truck (srw/drw) should have a sway control. A srw will feel that trailer quite a bit in bad traffic or weather. The drw won't so much but when shtf that additional control is good....and you have it.

Sourdough: We only had one shtf moment years ago in GA when some one ran red and crossed in front of us while accelerating, locked up the brakes at 45 MPH which warped one of our rotors on the F350 Dually years ago towing the 33 footer only on the ball. Trailer brakes locked as well it didn't try to jackknife.

The 25RDS that the 3500 with be towing is only 29 ft tongue to tail.

I'm a safety first kind of guy, and your input is welcome.

BTW: Patricia and I celebrated our 50th last month. The sad part is that we were both receiving Chemo Treatment that day.

Congrats on the new truck!….I have a 2020 Ram 3500 dually and i don’t even know my fifth wheel is behind me.
One thing you may want to verify is that the prior owner took care of the 6.7 cp4 fuel pump recall..it affects 2019 -2020 6.7 diesels…they go back to the tried and true cp3 fuel pump.If you have the cp4 on the truck and it fails it pretty much takes out most of the top end of the engine and could be thousands and thousands for the repair.
You should be able to look at the fuel pump and see what pump is installed.

also here is a article that explains it…in the article it mentions an aftermarket replacement pump ( came out before the recall)…but Ram has the recall in effect now. https://www.dieselworldmag.com/diese...d-cummins-cp4/

Jasin1: I was attempting to send a thank you, but it disappeared while typing and then I received an popup stating it had been sent, must have fat fingered something on the keypad.
Anyway back to the 3500, we lucked out, the truck has had all of the recalls performed by the dealer that originally sold it and just sold it to me less than an hour after it went on the lot, one of those right place at the right time moments. I was originally going to look at a 2109 Crew Cab Dually with 8ft bed and the same powertrain, and never got to it when I spotted this gem.
Thank you for your concern, I did my due diligence after looking at the vehicle and followed up with the dealer, all good. This truck has low mileage and was part of a two truck deal for the original owner, he ordered and purchased a 2024 version of the same truck as well was a loaded 1500. Wasn't used on a farm or ranch and is immaculate. Having that kind of disposable income must make somethings easy!

Congrats on the 50th! Another milestone in the bucket I suppose.

I'm sorry to hear about the chemo. I doesn't last forever so keep plowing ahead. Probably not the place but if you meet others it might help; they have genetic testing out there that can sometimes keep you from chemo and radiation.

When Susan had breast cancer they had her scheduled for her chemo and radiation treatments and we were talking to the oncologist. He mentioned this genetic testing as a great tool but most insurance didn't pay for it. Ours did and we had already done it (OncoDX IIRC)! He got the report and it said the chance of her NOT having a recurrence was over 96% - he just grinned real big, told us it was great news and she didn't have to have those treatments. Going on 13 years now so hope it was on the money. Good luck to both of you with those treatments and on getting better.

Many will say that the statement in blue above is false, but I agree, at 12,360# GVWR I hardly notice our 5er while towing.

Nope, I was actually looking for a different package when I ran across this one. A place in K.C. Had like 12 of them on the lot. 3 in this configuration but different colors. Those were all the “must haves”. Got lucky with a few other “gee wiz” things but the one thing I wish it had was the rear air suspension.
I will say though….this thing rides way better empty then my last (2005 2500 5.9 SB CC 4x4) but, I love this pickup!

Just picked up a new ram 3500 (2023) and I knew literally every diesel in the lots within a 150 miles. I found a few with this configuration on lots but you had to have a HO engine and DRW to get the large fuel tank. Sometime in the next year probably modifying mine with a large tank so I don’t have to stop between destinations. They do exist !

Towing without the jewelry

Towed the 25RDS last week to KC in some strong winds, (35 mph) with the RAM 3500 DRW, no sway. I didn’t want to use the trunnion bars on the weight distribution hitch. However, the load rating of the ball portion of the hitch requires the bars to be connected for our configuration, tongue weight etc. Anyway, I attribute the total lack of sway to the wide a$$ dually and not the contact of the trunnions on the A frame pads. Watching in the side mirror with the wind broadside at interstate speed, we would get a slight tremble of an inch or two at the tail of the trailer when getting slammed by gusts, and then it would immediately stop and tow true, we didn’t feel this in the truck. Comparing that to witnessing semi-trucks getting shoved halfway across lanes, I’m confident we don’t need the weight distribution hitch with anti-sway with this pickup. Since we used to tow 33 ft trailers only on the ball of a custom cowboy drop bumper in the 90s with a F350 LB CC 7.3 Powerstroke DI Wastegate without any issues, this should be the same or better since this is a wee bit shorter.
Ordered and received a Bulletproof 2.5” hitch with 6” drop and dual ball mount rated at 3,000 lb tongue weight, and rated for 22,000 lbs of trailer. I’ve removed the weight distribution jewelry from the A frame and we will get to try out the new hitch this Saturday when returning home. Looking forward to once again being able to simply drop the tongue on the ball and go! The reason I chose the 6 inch drop was to accommodate a utility trailer with the smaller ball. The only thing I wasn’t too happy about is that even though the ball height is easily adjustable, that is because the pins are only secured with “R” clips. I already ordered and received keyed alike locking versions of the pins.

Not the 40 to 50 MPH North and Northwesterly winds early in the week, the 25 - 35 MPH Southerly winds on Thursday.

We come into town for Cancer Treatments at KUMC and stay at Walnut Grove, too far to drive back and forth to Pottawatomie everyday!

We like Hillsdale, but the unpredictable traffic between there and KUMC is a significant factor against using the State Park.

I'm about 10 miles away from Walnut Grove. 117th and Antioch.
We love Hillsdale.
We store the Boat and Camper at the storage by the gas stations. Makes an easy trip!

We went once to Lake Miola last year in Paola. It's really small but all the sites are right by the water. Probably take the Gkids there this year.

I work for JE Dunn we built KUMC. Glad it's helping you 2 out!

How often do you come in? Glad the truck is doing you well where did you get it?
