5'er Hitch Set up

We are new to hauling RV's, but we are truly looking forward to the fun ahead. I am wondering what the best advice you can give for the best hitch set up. We are buying a 2008 29' Keystone Copper Canyon. We will pull her with a 2015 F250 Super Duty 6.7 Power Stroke Turbo Diesel regular bed, 6-3/4. I keep reading about products such as the Sidewinder. Will this attach to all 5th wheel hitches? I just want the safest mode to travel and get in and out of park spots. Any help would be forever appreciated.

Go with a quality fifth wheel hitch and mount it on a sliding base. I suggest the round tube over the flat for ease of use. Have had ours for several years and have only used it once. Just adds the peace of mind when maneuvering in tight situations.

I was very happy with my Pullrite Superglide in my F-250. I preferred the automatic slider hitch vs the manual but I have never used a manual one either and think either would be fine. Do you have the 5th wheel Ford factory prep in you new truck? I just installed a non slide Curt hitch in my new long bed truck that has the factory 5th wheel prep. I haven't pulled with it yet but really like the design, adjustability, and ease of use. I did hook up my trailer and and it's very ease to use.

Also, if you plan on installing a bed cover think about what kind you want. I used the Bakflip and liked it but when folded up to the back window for towing the 5th wheel it takes up at least 6 inches of maneuvering space and without the slider hitch would have made my maneuvering very limited. I never had any issues though with the bed cover combined with the Pullrite Superglide but would get close to it if turning very sharp.

If memory serves you don't have cut outs on the front of your fiver so get a slider with tubes they seem to function easiest. or for peace of mind look into an auto slider. if your forgetful like me an auto slider is the way to go. down side is they are heavy and cost more. the reese sidewinder is a good product it replaces your pin box. I don't have one but I do have friends that do and they like them. the only gripe they have is you need to be damn near straight inline to hitch up. The best advice is practice with what ever set up you decide is best for you. every season when I first get my camper I go to a big open parking lot and practice baking and maneuvering.

I agree with Desert185, the Anderson Fifth Wheel hitch has been great for us but a word of caution.... If your trailer nose is not configured or recessed in the lower corners for maximum clearance, you might be better off with a traditional type slider hitch.

Towing with a shortbed is addressed by Andersen on their site. I just returned from towing 4,500-5,000 miles with it. I have no complaints. Remove one pin, loosen three bolts and the 74# hitch (gooseneck attach version) is removed from the bed leaving no rails behind. 24,000# capacity. No regrets.

Watch the Andersen videos.

I too went with a Pullrite Superglide. I love having the ease of mind of not having to think about switching it manually. It always surprises me when I get out and see where the hitch has traveled on the slider bars (I always wipe the bars clean with an even layer of WD40 before each trip. Side effect is I can tell where the hitch has traveled.)

I agree though; it IS heavy!

5'er Hitch Set up

Wow! You guys are great to share this info with a rookie! I really do appreciate all of the info and I am looking at each set up you guys suggested to see which is best for us. I am definitely thinking one of the automatic sliders would be best for us, because these days my CRS disease is very active...lol! For those that don't know what CRS disease is, Can't Remember S@$t disease...lol! I will let y'all know what set up we go with! Happy travels everyone!

Was considering trading my Hensley TT Arrow for a TrailerSaver. Looks like it would cushion the ride well. Just saw this thread and it looks like the Andersen hitch is a possibility but I dont see any airbags or struts. Can the Andersen hitch really eliminate the bouncing and the pushing/pulling????

The 5er has a "best in class MOR/Ryde Hitch Pin Box. Not sure if this eliminates the need for the TrailerSaver.

Truck has 8 ft bed.....

Also, look on Craigslist or even on this forum for used ones. I see the Pullrite Superglides listed regularly for around $500-$700 but can be bought for $500 easily.

I also have a short bed truck and the Pullrite Superglide has been the best choice for me. I did find mine on Craigslist, I got lucky and was able to get one with removable rails and the proper mounting kit for my make of truck. The tricky part was finding the dealer close by to do the install. But I really like my model and like the fact that i won't be put in a tight situation with the cab and the fiver comming together. It requires some maintainance and is heavy but when it comes out there are no rails in my bed just the 4 holes for the mounting pins. Good luck in your search there are also some internet videos online so that might offer some insight on how they work and options.

It will eliminate the "chucking". At 24,000# capacity, the whole concept just makes a lot of sense to me. I can have a clean, unobstructed bed in just a few minutes without fear of a hernia. 74-75# is nothing.

Another thing of note with the Anderson hitch is that there is no grease involved. Coupler is self- lubricated.

5'er Set up

We have decided to go with the Pullrite Superglide. From my readings, it's the best out there right now. Thanks for all the tips, and I will check Craig's list before going with a new set up. We will let y'all know how it goes! Happy travels!!

I use a TrailerSaver TS3 Air Ride Hitch with Air Compressor Option – Auto-inflate/deflate. (built in compressor) mounts onto ISR rails. (industry standard) $300 for the built in compressor. Hitch is heavy and weighs about 270 pounds

http://www.trailersaver.com/product/ts3-air-ride-hitch/

PullRite SuperRail system. Hitch and rails come right out of the truck (with and electric wench hooked up in the garage) leaving the bed flat.

Items Ordered Qty Price
PullRite 2328 - 24K ISR SUPERRAIL MOUNTIN 1 $589.16

This hitch really rides great but you may need a slider as many have mentioned. Hensley does sell a manual slide box to go with the Hensley TS3. I have a new Fuzion and a 6.5 bed on my GMC and have not had the need for the slider. (Fuzion has the 85 degree cap)

good luck

That's a nice setup! I talked to a guy at a campsite about a year ago that had that hitch and loved it, said his 5th wheel pulled very, very nice.

The Sidewinder attaches to the trailer to give a tighter turning radius on a 6-3/4' bed. After son in law bumped the cab corner on his F-250 we had one put on the trailer and it work's great. It depend's on the type trailer pin box design so every trailer builder may be different. 8' bed would have been no problems.

You can't really tell by this picture but the pin box is extended about 6 inches and swivels so there is more turning clearance

Hi GmaPaTime
My wife and I just purchased a 2015 29RLI, how do you like it? We won't get the RV until end of May due to issues with Ford getting us our truck!
