Hitch on rear of fifth wheel
I have a Montana 3400RL. Does anyone know or has anyone ever installed a rear reese type hitch on their 3400rl? Occasionally we like to take our small boat to a local lake..... I know I am too long with the boat but..........

If you ask Keystone they'll say don't do it as they feel their frame isn't strong enough. Now on the flip side there are many out there that do. Hidden Hitch makes a hitch that many member on the MOC have added to their Montanas, it's made for MH but fits within the Montana frame. Or another option is to have a custom hitch fab'd by a shop. MorRyde does a good job if you're in their neighborhood.

Frame not strong enough? Don't they offer it as a factory option on a bunch of models?

Yes, Keystone does offer a Receiver Hitch on some models. But it's a 1 1/4 receiver with a very low weight capacity. It's so light weight that most won't even carry bikes on it.

There are several threads with extensive discussions on this. Try searching on rear receiver and you should find them.
Here is one good one: http://www.keystonerv.org/forums/sho...ght=rear+hitch

Thanks for the note Steve. The problem with the 3400RL is it doesn't have a rear bumper.

Exactly! None of us will recommend fastening a receiver to a rear bumper of any trailer. The bumpers are rated for no more than 200# which would be bad business for towing anything. They don't even work well for bike racks.
There are several receivers designed for RV's and TT's that will work. I believe Lund offers them. There are lots of discussions on this in earlier threads.
Edit to add: These receivers are direct connect to the frame and bypass bumpers and slideout bike racks completely. Some bolt on. Others can be welded.

I had my dealer fab a receiver hitch on our 2012 Alpine. We faced the same issue, no rear bumper. For about $595 we have a hitch that we can carry our kayaks and bikes. Pics are in my album.

Appreciate the pics! Looks like they used aluminum and tied it to each side frame, close as I can tell. I have a local fab shop, son-in-law, that might be able to help me out. I was trying to prevent taking the belly skin off near the rear as it is tied into the back cap. Anyway, thanks again. Ozarkcamper

The receiver hitch is made of steel. The dealer cut back just enough of the coroplast to weld the hitch to the frame then used spray foam to reseal the gaps.
