Hate is a strong word. I think they are under pressure to push them out the door and this trailer just happens to be the one being built when the reel of hose was just about out. Lead for that station probably said “one more and we’ll change out the reel”.

At least that’s what I would like to think.

Actually I don't think they give the end user, or the dealer service tech, one second of thought at all, just throw it together & roll it out the door.
Also the majority of those folks as well as most rv salesmen have NEVER spent one night in an rv & couldn't tell you how to set it up to stay for an extended stay somewhere.

They are not all like that. My black tank flush does not have the one way (check valve) valve on it. When I disconnect the supply hose, the anti-siphon opens, draining water one direction into the black tank and the other direction out the supply hose connection. After the anti-siphon opens and drains both ways, there is no water in the system.

Just goes to show how inconsistent the installs are. On a side note, it is easy (couple minutes) to pop the guts out of the check valve to make it drain.

Forgive me if I'm missing something, but I thought that was exactly what the anti-siphon valve did; open up, allow air in, and the water drains away in both directions. Of course, with the check valve on your unit, one leg cannot drain.

As for the location of the anti-siphon valve, on my previous unit (a Forest River product) it was placed behind a wall. I had to listen/guess where it was and cut a hole in the paneling to get it out. I relocated it to the basement since the instructions with the brass one only require it to be 6" above the tank/supply connection.

As for techs- your probably more right than wrong. I’ve had a fiver since 1989, always did my own work so I’m a leg up I think.

We rented a class C last year and in our travels, we ended up driving a fair way with a mostly full black tank.
As we crossed the border into Alabama, we spotted a large rocket in a rest area, so being the space nerd that I am, we decided to have a butcher's.
When we pulled into the rest area, I noticed a convenient dump station so we pulled up.
I put on the gloves, pulled out the hose and prepared for action. I put the hose on the outlet and the end into the drain at the station. The drain didn't have a positive connection, so I just inserted the end of the hose into the hole. Then I pulled the valve on the black tank. there was the usual whooshing sound, but also a different gurgling sound. After a couple of seconds, the brown tide started rising out of the drain, complete with all the blind mullets. I quickly shut off the valve as the outflow pooled around the drain. It didn't quite overflow into the parking lot because the drain entry was set in a slight depression.
With very red faces, we quickly packed up and drove to a parking slot to go have a look at the rocket ... *whistling*

My neighbor had a "friend" who asked if he could dump his motor home in my neighbors septic. He said ok. The "friend" then proceeded to put his dump hose into a 4" pvc that provided access to an underground water valve and opened the black tank valve. After dumping sewage all over the place, the guy drove off and never said a word; leaving the mess for my neighbor to clean up.

From what I understand, my model used to have them under the bathroom sink, but some genius decided instead to put them in the bathroom clothes closet in my model year. The valve is very easy to get to, but the consequences of failure are (to me) much greater.

Red face

Not a Poonamie but close...

Purchased our new 5er at the end of January, did the PDI the first week of February and just completed the shakedown run this last week. Didn't cover BW/GW valves in/out (my problem, not the tech's) as this is my third rig. I have to move stuff from 2nd TT to 3rd RV and its bedding, pots and pans, kitchen ware, various stuff and junk that we have accumulated over the last 15 years of camping in towed rigs. Doing it solo, it takes a while to move stuff from where it was in the old unit to where you think it should be in the new unit. Took about four hours to move it. But, hey, they put water in the tank to show that the pump and heater works! It's hot, I have a drink and pretty soon you have to let it out. Why walk into the dealership when you got a pump and tank right here, right? Did I mention that I told the tech that I know about the valves? So, I do my thing in the rig I'm paying for and keep on moving stuff.

Off we go on the shakedown run. Get to the first campsite and look at both the handles: Fully extended! Well, this is going to be mostly water anyway I look at it and I have to hook up the line so I close the valves and remove the travel cap... A little splash later I've got the sewer line hooked up, Mama is chuckling and I'm as mad as a wet... Sailor.

We're there for four days. Showers must be taken and dishes must be washed. On the third day we have a "Full" indication on the grey tank. No worries, I already have the elbow and final isolation valve installed, hose hooked up and all I have to do is pull two handles for a minute and we should be around 50% on GW tank. Except that someone didn't check to ensure that all lugs were on the proper way and I'm dressed to go out. Final valve open, GW valve open and GW on the grass because the elbow came off of the pipe. Go to shut the GW valve and dang near faceplant into the puddle. And then Mama starts again because she is behind me learning where the valves are (I left her in the RV). Now I'm and get to change clothes again.

I sure am glad I found this thread, The DW and I bought our RV in September but for multiple reasons we have not been able to use it until next week. I hope this time has kept me from some of these pitfalls. A few weeks ago I sterilized the fresh water system and when it came to draining the tanks there was one BW handle and one GW handle but I noticed there were three GW buttons but 2 registering a 1/3 of the tank with only 1 handle I assumed it was a wiring issue. After dumping the bleach water I refilled the tank with fresh water to flush the system. I checked the indicator lights and #2 GW tank was full. I quit flushing and started to look under the rig, there was a hole near the BW handle I started a thread about it and Chuckster57 told me that sometimes the handle and extension fall off. I got one, put it on and was able to drain the tank. I can only imagine what would have happened with out draining the tank after using it for real. This thread has opened my eyes and allowed me to customize my checklist.

German couple driving an El Monte rental class C in front of us in line at Yellowstone... Dumped and then filled their tank with the rinse hose.

FACT: I trust my black tank check valve so much that I cringe every time I turn the water on to use it (with a regulator).

FACT: My list of modifications includes replacing that plastic valve with a brass valve as soon as I remember to get one from Lowe's.
We had a problem with the fitting the 2nd trip out when the TT was new and flooded under the sink. My husband realized what happened and replaced that plastic valve with a brass valve. Takes the valve off in the winter so it does not freeze.

Some 47 years ago, parents and I were travelling back in a 24' travel trailer we had spent 3 months in. Dad was in the Air Force, and had to go to Castle AFB near Atwater, CA for aircraft commander/pilot training in the KC135.

On our way back home, stopped at a rest stop somewhere in Arizona. There was a dump station, so dad decided to empty the black tank. Hooked up the hose, etc. - and was on his back half under the trailer.

Asked me to open the dump valve. I did, and it started flowing. Right out of the connection and onto the asphalt. I never saw the man move so fast in my whole life. But he got out high and dry.

The asphalt, unfortunately, did NOT remain unscathed.
